Description: Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve is located near Pelion, South Carolina and features the highest waterfall [20 feet] in the South Carolina coastal plain! You will be amazed to see very large boulders in this area. This is the on the South Carolina ridge line where the old Atlantic Ocean met the North American land mass. There are several trails in the preserve that are good for all skill levels. Debby will check them out before the hike and choose something between 3 and 4 miles that includes the highlights of the area. Dogs are able to use the trail but must be kept on leash.
Meeting Place: At the trail head just off highway 6. The bridge over the South Edisto River on highway 302 east of Aiken is out. So a detour to Wagener is necessary. Take Rt 78 east toward Charleston and turn left on Old Tory Trail which takes you to Aiken State Park. Left on State Park Rd which takes you back to Rt 302 after the construction. Right on 302 will take you to Wagner and then on to Pelion. Pelion is a good place to stop for a washroom break. From Pelion Proceed on 302 to its junction with highway 6. Turn right at highway 6 and the trail head is on the left about a mile further along highway 6. Alternatively, if you are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and want to car pool from Aiken meet at the Publix parking lot at 8.15 am for an 8.30 am start. The trail head is about one hour from Aiken.
Lunch:  On our previous hike to Peachtree Rock, on our way home, we stopped for lunch at The Little Bake Shop 135 Main Street North in Wagener. They specialize in baked goods and very tasty sandwiches. If you wish to have lunch, please let Debby know – it is a small place and they would appreciate knowing how many are coming.
Distance: A 2.5-to 3-mile loop
Terrain: Some small hills but mainly flat. Several areas are fairly open. Do not count on a lot of shade. The trails are usually dry.
Bring:  Good sneakers or hiking boots, water, snack.
