Description: On April 15th I checked out the Kalmia on the Kalmia Trail in Hitchcock Woods. This year, there will not be the same spectacular bloom we witnessed last year. The severe frost we had a few weeks ago killed a lot of the potential blooms. However, some blooms survived and when I saw them, most were still tight buds. I estimate the best bloom time will be around the end of April. Note the early start time to beat the heat! We will do a 2.5-mile hike which will include the Kalmia trail. The route below is 2.5 miles but may be adjusted as required. There are a lot of choices in this part of the Woods!

Meeting Place: The Dibble Road parking lot near the railroad crossing. We need to start here because the usual parking area is closed due to construction. There are 3 entrances to Hitchcock Woods off Dibble Road; be sure to go to the one near the railroad crossing!

Meeting time: 7.45 am for a 8.00 am start

Distance: 2.5 miles

Terrain: Sand underfoot in many areas; one hill to descend to the Kalmia trail and a bigger one to climb back out on return to the cars. The trails are usually dry. You must be able to handle the hills!

Bring: Water. Walking stick would be helpful.
